As we look around we can see a huge variety of designed buildings. The idea that a public place should be a masterpiece of design probably came from the United States. Businessmen realized that they would succeed in the market more easily, if they created a unified exterior. That is the reason why Mc Donald’s restaurants are all look identical. Designers found the most appropriate appearance and it became popular world-wide. In eastern European countries, especially in Hungary, the importance of well-designed pedestrian places is realized some years ago. We can see examples in the financial market, for instance Postabank, which has found attractive exterior and also interior for inviting more and more clients in. We can draw the conclusion that designing is not even necessary, but absolutely important. This essay intends to outline the main ideas when creating an imaginary au-pair agency.

First of all we have to find the perfect place for the office. Location is significant from two points of view: the clients are concerned with the easy way finding, and we have to take it into account, that a public office must be equally available to everyone. It means that a central business district would probably satisfy the expectations. However, if we do not have strong financial support we may meet some difficulties. Buying or renting a place in the town centre can cost a fortune, even so, for a longterm business, such as an au-pair agency, that is the best solution. We could place the agency for instance, in the centre of Pecs. Kiraly street seems to be a good choice, because it has all the potentials that an au-pair agency would require. It is a busy pedestrian precinct with a great variety of shops, social places, commercial and entertainment facilities. These possibilities attract many passers-by to walk through this street both purposefully and casually, and our next client might be among them.

As far as the exterior of the office is concerned we only have to pay attention to the doors and windows, because in the centre of Pecs buildings had been already designed in a certain style. Doors are important to provide access to the office. In some places doors can discourage entry, for instance in nightclubs, where security guards stand at entrances prohibiting entry to those, who do not fit a profile of acceptable dress or behaviour. In an au-pair agency it is a bit different. The door has to be visually conspicuous, because it needs to attract many clients. Large windows are also important, because they look modern and their transparency makes the whole office lighter. In huge cities like New York, most of the office buildings are designed with glass-and-steel system, which allows a kind of spatial continuity between exterior and interior.

When we enter a room the first impression has the biggest influence on us. According to this, our office should be bright, because an ill-lit interior can destroy the clients` expectations. Dimness makes them feel uncomfortable, bored and tired. That is why large windows are necessary not only for the outer appearance, but also for interior purposes. Artificial light is not enough to fill the whole office with the desired brightness. To have natural daylight in the office we have to pay attention to the size of the windows. Large mirrors can also strengthen the feeling of brightness and putting them to the right place, they can enlarge the inside of our agency. We can buy for instance some plants as well, which do not occupy a large area, and place a mirror behind them. With this we are able to reach brightness again, and that green area makes our office a little bit exotic.

Psychologists took research into the effects of colours for human attitudes. It is important also for us to put emphasis on the use of different colours when we design the interior. Colours are just as important for the person who works in our au-pair agency as for those, who just pop in to look for a job. Vivid colours can be rather irritating for the staff, because they have to bear it all day long, but perhaps those, who first enter our office can find the interior absolutely fresh and well-designed. The colours of the walls would be white, light blue or green and the furniture should be grey or neutral.

Furniture determine the interior of the office and they are also significant in providing comfort for the staff and the clients. In order to enjoy their everyday work, our staff need comfortable pieces of furniture. If they feel that to do their duty is not a drag, they are more polite as well as enthusiastic with the clients. When clients enter the office they immediately feel good because of the aesthetic furniture. If they happen to wait for a longer period of time they will not feel that they are in a formal office building. It will be a pleasure for them to sit down on well-designed sofas or to read brochures at modern coffee tables.

One of the main aims of an office is to satisfy its clients, but in the twentieth century it has become extremely important to design its exterior and interior in the most appropriate way. It is a good idea to pay attention to the appearance of a public place, because there are competitions going on in the whole world and only those, who make the greatest effort in terms of attracting clients will survive.

The industrial establishments are usually placed in the outskirts of a town. That is the reason why it is suitable to develop offices that represents different companies in the centre of a city such as in an elegant and stylish office-block. This large building contains many offices usually belonging to more than one company. Important business transactions take place in offices preferably, therefore attributing great importance to its designing is primary. It is a highly responsible job that requires time and a vivid imagination of the designer creating new ideas.

Work, in close connection with designing, goes on beforehand and it is essential to write about because the two can not be separated. Conciliatory discussion is taking place before the planning, which can last for months. Those who are present are the customers, designers and executors. The process of the planning is a group work of different designers-such as structural engineer, architect and mechanic-who are in touch with each other all the time. There are various kinds of designers. One is specialised in designing the building, its structure, and another person works on the furnishing. At the beginning of the planning operations the designer prepares a plan. The outline drawing of the building shows the position and size of the various parts.

When choosing the right place for an office the designer must think about the accessibility mainly. Placing the modern development by or near the main street of a town, it will be easy to find and also easy of access. In connection with the approachibility a parking place is essential either close to the office or sunken under the ground floor, which saves place. As for the exterior walls of the building if it is a requirement to fit it into the surrounding, a characteristic facade might be designed. In the lack of any serious demand, the building of the offices can be provocative in itself.

An aesthetic main entrance leaves a great impression on people entering the building. It was already a good job of the designer if the guest enters with positive feelings. Revolving doors appeared at the end of the 19th century. The use of these doors is advantageous where artistic appearance and air conditioning is a requirement. It reduces the heating expenses and locks out the dust from the street. It dies down the noise, which enables designers to make use of the area in the immediate vicinity of the entrance.

The development of a representative hall is essential. It shows the standard of the offices inside the building. For the costumers guidance a reception desk is built where clients are received and informed. The use of cheerful colours can influence the mood, which also designers must take into account.

A designer's job whose responsibility is the furnishing is just as important and complex. In the case of modern establishments architecture shows a great tendency to use glass even inside and outside the building. Offices separated with glass walls are rare in Hungary yet. However glass walls reduce the feeling of being confined within the four walls. They create spacious and large rooms, yet the offices are physically separated from each other. The use of glass is advantageous as well where the corridors are narrow. Natural light can be utilized in that way, which saves electricity expenses.

The glass plays an important part in furnishing too. Thank to the modern manufacturing and processing technology glass lost its fragility. It can easily be put in any shape and formed into a piece of furniture. Let us make an imaginary visit to a modern office where the designer shows a preferance to the use of the glass. The lady at the reception kindly offers a seat in a pretty bended glass armchair. Being afraid of breaking it into pieces, you sit down very cautiously. Your amazement is heightening when seeing a set of shelves made of thin glass and loaded with heavy books. When helping you off with your coat it is being hanged up on a glass coat rack. The surface of the writing desk is also made of glass.

Glass can be nicely combined with other materials such as wood. A conference table made of the combination of the two elements can even make a boring discussion memorable. It is always great to return to a tastefully furnished and decorated office. Equipments such as a computer, typewriter and stationery are part of the furniture and all the offices.

A restaurant, a buffet or a coffee-bar ensures the welfare of the office workers and also the customers. If the restaurant is built to the top floor and the natural endowments of the environment are fortunate the users can take pleasure in the sight of a beautiful view. It is also elemental that the office workers can have their meal inside the building, and they do not have to leave it for a coffee.

Picturing a modern office block in the approach of the 21st century men would imagine a glittering glass building reaching to the sky. Workers and customers who spend their most time of the day between those walls do not want to feel uncomfortable or locked in. To guarantee their ease, cosiness and even luxury, very talented group of designers are needed. The designers of any kind must work out the plan in great detail because the process of construction is put into execution by following that plan. Usually their time is limited, which makes the job harder. The long process of planning and designing needs to be paid a great attention and the hard work of the people will result a building that will be pleasant to look at. The main aim of designing an office block modern is to make customers feel urged to return.

The general well - being and the effectiveness of working is dependent on the atmosphere of the place of work. Spending one third of the day at the same place has a great influence on the person. That is why as efficiency, comfort and pleasantness should be taken into account while designing an office. These features are often sorted out due to mounting costs of the constructing of facilities. Often inappropriate furniture is installed - either because of neglect or financial reasons - endangering the employees' health. Using up-to -date office equipment saves time and makes working less enervating.

A modern office is designed to operate in an energy efficient manner by balancing external environmental influences with the internal environmental requirements. Current designs base the importance on electronic infrastructure, embracing controls, communications, internal environment and information processing. It is vital for offices to optimise their energy use. Presence detectors should be installed to control the climate, keeping the temperature and humidity on a permanent level. Choosing the right illumination is essential in an office. The energy saver fluorescent tubes are the most suitable. They use sixty percent less energy, and last eight times longer than ordinary light bulbs. Also they provide twenty five percent more brightness. Quietness is a key element while creating an efficient working environment. A sound insulation system accompanied by double glazed windows can prevent sounds filtering in from outside. Quiet music has positive stimulating effect on the person under constant pressure of concentrating. A well equipped office should employ an audio stereo system that have four active loudspeakers with built - in tremble and bass amplifiers on each wall.

Working in a office could not be imagined without the use of computers. A computer not just makes work quick and easy but with the access of the Internet, it provides wide-range information service and global communications, connecting users from all over the world. As the number of people who work with computers has risen, the danger of possible harmful effects has grown. Besides mental stress, physical problems can also occur. There is risk of eye strain caused by the glare of the screen. To avoid this, it is necessary to have the right equipment, such as low radiation, flicker- free screens .The sunlight reflecting on the screen can seriously damage the retina. Photocromatic glass that darkens in strong sunlight is becoming common, while electrochromatic glass even allows windows to be switched on and off. Tendon injuries, backache and headache can be prevented by installing the proper furniture : an adequate desk with an adjustable chair that supports the back. It is vital to make sure that the screen is in level with the eyes. The constant pressure, that the feet are exposed to, could be relieved by using a footrest. It also progresses good blood circulation.

Keeping plants in an office does not just have aesthetical reasons. They are also the best weapon against the so-called " sick building syndrome". This illness is caused by invisible and odourless gases emanating from synthetic materials, cleaning fluids, photocopying chemicals and glues. They do not only cause allergic reactions - runny noses, irritated eyes, feeling of nausea and dizziness - but also damage the nervous system the liver and kidneys. A few victims may become permanently afflicted. The risk is especially great in tightly sealed, energy efficient office buildings, where the air does not circulate freely. Laboratory experiments confirmed that plants such as dieffenbachia, English ivy, date palm can sop up dangerous gases and decrease the risk of the syndrome.

They also successfully use human nourishment while converting carbon dioxide to produce oxygen. Choosing the right materials can help solving this problem. Pressed wood and synthetic carpets let out large amount of pollutants. It is advisable to have furniture made out of natural materials like pine, oak or cherry tree. Synthetic carpets could be replaced by woollen carpets or natural wood floor.

Besides physical and health problems the significant mental stress should also be considered. While normal work pressures can stimulate performance, a stress overload often leads to problems. The pleasant and friendly environment of the office could successfully ease this stress. Why not bring a bit of home and outside world into the office?

Creating a user friendly atmosphere begins with the constructing. The restricted space of an office can be opened up by huge roof windows. These can help create a roomy feel and keep a small space from being claustrophobic. By smuggling a bit of nature into the office - with a little imagination - the feeling of working in the open air can be experienced. The strict perpendicularity of the walls can be softened up by using round and oval forms. As for the colour scheme it is best to avoid sharp contrasts. It is necessary to select colours that work together.
Tones have proven effect on the nervous system. Experiments have recorded that brighter colours raise blood pressure, while the duller ones lower it. As pastel shades evoke tranquillity and relaxation, they are more suitable for office walls. The colours of the walls and the floor should be harmonious with the furniture. Design details make all the difference. The decoration of an office should be casually unpretentious.

An office should not just house a large collection of high technology but also provide a healthy and agreeable working environment. It would make work more efficient and enjoyable too. As a result the general attitude towards working could be changed.
