For the first sight International Wildlife might seem an easy-to-read, entertaining magazine full of pictures and articles about animals and plants. However it is quite very far from that.
International Wildlife is a high-in-quality environmental magazine both in its content, outlook and style. In my essay I would like to focus on the aims and inventions of the magazine and the way it fulfills the requirements of these aims.

Actually, the main goal of the paper, that we might call the " theory of the magazine" is put into words on the second page in a form of a slogan of "working for the nature of tomorow" and a detailed description in addition under the title of "editorial creed":

"To create and encourage an awarness among the people of the world of the need for wise use and proper management of those resources of the Earth upon which our lives and welfare depend: the soil, the air, the water, the forest, the minerals, the plant life and the wildlife."

Beside the "editorial creed, the second page always has two main functions. Partly National Wildlife Federation information are conveyed here, such as "Board of Directors", "Federation Executive Staff", and general information about the federation. On the other side of the page there is a photo with a short ramark.

the third page is important from three points of view. Firstly, it contains the register. The titles of the articles are mentioned together with the names of the writers, the number of the pages and the subtitles. There is special interest drawn to certain articles by a not of the editors that always occur on this page. it is a kind of a summary with some remarks written by the editors. On the rest of the page there is the list of the editorial staff and information about the covers.

Another characteristic feature of International Wildlife is that the first and the last pages - the covers - of the magazine are photos, usually especially beautiful ones, aiming to rise interest. The information about the covers on the third page is incredibly detailed containing the name of the photographer, place, type of the camera, type of the film...etc. For example:

"Back: A venemous blue-ring octopus crawls over tubastrea coral off Queensland, Australia. Alex Kerstitch photographed it with a Nikon F3 camera in underwater housing and Kodachrome 64 film."

The body of the magazine is made up of different types of articles . According to the types in content, we can divide them into four groups. the first - also the biggest one - is the group of
articles written on nature - plants or wildlife - from a scientific point of view. These articles are about the lives and habits of animals, new discoveries in the world of plants or wildlife. Writing
these articles obviously need special interest and expertise of the writer. Just to show some examples: "Snake Snacks"; "The Sheer Wonder of Penguines" are such titles.

The second main type of articles occuring in the magazine deals with environmental topics. Scientists tell their opinions in those, or statistics are conveyed on the topic of the relationship of man and nature. For example: "New Bird in a Battered Forest': "Japanese Window of Opportunity".

Articles belonging to the first and second group are usually long articles; they make up the main part of the magazine. But beside them there are plenty of shorter articles that fulfill quite
different functions. On one hand I.W. containes ads. Of course not Coca-cola advertisements, but ads about practical advices of protecting our nature. Namely, what to eat, use and how in order to avoid pollution in our near surroundings. Other types of ads advertise the magazine itself, the way one can get access to it, and other American-like means of nature-advertisements, such as T-shirts with lions.

Just in the middle of the magazine there is a separated group of articles printed on a different kind of paper: Wildlife Digest which is "trends, issues, views and news." These articles are shorter ones, news, statistics about latest happenings in terms of environmental
issues and the life of the federation. Some titles: "Environmental Groups Score Some Big Aims in Congress"; "U.S. has Lost Half of its Wetlands in Past 200 Years". Wildlife Digest is a more dynamic, current, paper-like part of the magazine aiming environmental purposes by motivating people to follow the events and clarifying the situation in their heads in those terms.

the magazine always provide exact names, dates and places in every kind of articles; although "quality" is not only represented in reliance, style, attitude and content, but also in outlook. The quality of the paper the magazine is printed on, the structure, and the colourful organization not lacking fantasy contributes to the wonderful outlook but what is mostly characteristic about it is the quality of the photos. The perfect, beautiful photos made by experts attract the eye and motivate not only to read the articles, but also helps the federation to reach their aims. To involve more and more people into the movement of protecting nature, make them believe the fact, that we must take care of our natural surroundings in order to
"make Earth a better place".

As an extra part of the magazine there is a photo contest in every year and the winner photos are conveyed once a year on the last pages, which is always one of the nicest experineces of International Wildlife readers.
